Brer Rabbit and Brer Bear
ONE SUMMER Brer Fox said to himself that heâd better hurry up and plant his pea-patch. So he got his spade, dug up his ground and planted out his peas.
Old Brer Rabbit came by when he was planting them, and when he thought of juicy ripe peas he winked his eye at his children and sang:
âTi-yi! Tungalees!
Iâll eat his peas, Iâll pick his peas!
Iâll get each pod and give it a squeeze,
Ti-yi! What juicy peas!â
Sure enough when the peas began to ripen, Brer Fox found that someone had been down in the pea-patch, eating his peas, and he felt mighty mad. He guessed he knew who the someone was, but old Brer Rabbit was so smart that Brer Fox really didnât know how to catch him.
By and by, one day Brer Fox took a walk all round his pea-patch and it wasnât long before he found a hole in the fence that had been rubbed quite smooth with somebody passing in and out.
âLook at that!â said Brer Fox to himself. âRight there is where the thief comes in and out. This is where Iâll set a trap!â
He saw a young hickory-tree growing near by. He took a piece of string and tied one end to the top of the tree. He pulled the string and the tree bent half over. Then Brer Fox made a loop-knot at the other end of the string and fixed it neatly round the hole in the fence, keeping it in place with a stick. As soon as anyone crept in through the hole, the string would tighten round him, and the hickory tree would jerk up straight, taking the robber with it, swinging on the end of the string. My, that would be a fine scare for old Brer Rabbit, next time he came lolloping in through the hole!
